The same kind of leather has been used to make shoes in Athani for generations. It’s tanned using just a few ingredients: water, acacia tree bark, and myrobalan (the nut of a Terminalia chebula tree). Every piece of leather is infused with myrobalan, which is also a natural dye; when mixed with iron, myrobalan reacts to create a deep black. So, we can simply dip our shoe leather in water + with iron for a colorfast black dye that won’t fade or rub off.
We believe in products with a sense of place. Mohinders are made by master shoemakers in Athani, India, whose designs are iconic to the surrounding region: Northern Karnataka.
