What's in the name?

This batch, aptly named “Tilt-a-Whirl” is a nostalgic nod to the shades of summer on the boardwalk—orange sherbet, cotton candy, and purple skies at dusk.

The Technique

Sumingashi is the original paper marbling technique from the 12th century. Paint is collected through a dropper and carefully placed onto the surface of water. The artist controls the pigments used, the hue, and the shape of the paint as it swirls across the flat surface before getting “picked up” in this case, by the shoe. Sumingashi which literally translates to “ink floating" is a practice in patience, color theory, fluid mechanics, and magic. The color combinations and patterns truly are endless which is what makes this collaboration that much more special.
