Woven Flat / Iron-dyed Leather

Iron dye is colorfast and won't rub off on feet. Each pair is dyed by hand; natural variation in color tone is to be expected.

Details / Iron-dye

Every pair is dyed by hand in a simple process using water + iron. The myrobalan in our leather reacts with iron for a colorfast black, which won’t rub off on your feet or fade over time. Iron-dyed shoes can be easily re-conditioned at home to restore the deepest black; some natural variation in color tone is to be expected.

  • Natural iron-dye process: nothing synthetic, no hard-to-pronounce chemicals
  • Colorfast black won’t rub off on feet
  • Full-grain water buffalo leather molds to your feet over time for the perfect fit
  • Cushioned footbed
  • Soft leather lining
  • Stacked leather midsole
  • Durable, grippy crepe rubber sole
  • Styles with a back are great for long days of exploring

How does Iron-dyed leather work?

The same kind of leather has been used to make shoes in Athani for generations. It’s tanned using just a few ingredients: water, acacia tree bark, and myrobalan (the nut of a Terminalia chebula tree). Every piece of leather is infused with myrobalan, which is also a natural dye; when mixed with iron, myrobalan reacts to create a deep black. So, we can simply dip our shoe leather in water + with iron for a colorfast black dye that won’t fade or rub off.

Where are they made?

We believe in products with a sense of place. Mohinders are made by master shoemakers in Athani, India, whose designs are iconic to the surrounding region: Northern Karnataka. Follow our off-the-beaten-path journey through Karnataka’s red-rock climbing walls, cave temples, and outdoor sandal markets along the way.
