Meet Liz Spencer a.k.a. The Dogwood Dyer: our newest Limited Edition collarboration! Liz is an artist, plant-dyer, educator, and mom living in Southern California. Liz has an insatiable curiosity for coaxing color from plants and has devoted her artistic practice to foraging, growing, and processing natural-dye plants. Her passion for sustainably extracting rich and living colors is contagious, and also happens to be a match-made-in-collaboration-heaven. Liz lives by the Natural-dye Process of using only: water, salt, plant dye, patience, and time.
Liz hand-paints each autumnal line by hand using cochineal (an insect dye) and madder root (a plant dye) — historically important natural dyes that she also grows in her own garden and forages locally. Every individual plant imparts a unique and unrepeatable color which depends on the soil, sun, rain, harvest time, water quality, and temperatures involved in the growing and processing. Each pair is truly a unique autumnal composition – so don't wait to get yours now!
